Travel Vaccinations – Axbridge and Wedmore Medical Practice

Travel Advice

The following travel vaccinations are usually available free on the NHS:

These vaccines are usually free because they protect against diseases thought to represent the greatest risk to public health if they were brought into the country.

For patients with a travel date within 4 weeks, we cannot offer a full travel service.  The free NHS travel injections (listed above) will usually* be offered in a 10 minute appointment 2–4 weeks after contacting the surgery .

  • When patients wish to book travel appointments, they should consider the following:
  • - When you are travelling,
  • Have you looked at FIT FOR TRAVEL website to see if you need any vaccines

and if so, what these may be,

  • Timescale for vaccines that may be needed,
  • Have you had vaccines previously?  If you wish to have a print out of your vaccination history, please request this from reception staff.
  • If travel is within a month, please book a routine 10 minute face to face appointment (one 10 minute appointment per person) with one of our nurses trained in Travel. This will be an appointment for the free NHS travel vaccines; if further travel advice or vaccinations are required patients may have to rebook with our Travel nurse (or elsewhere, if travel time is tight) for any other vaccines.  Nurses will advise you at your appointment.
  • If patients request a course of vaccinations, such as Hep B, (which we charge for) which is 3 jabs given over 1 month, a longer time scale for booking these appointments will be required, e.g. 6–8 weeks.  Due to this we may not be able to accommodate patients for these vaccines at short notice.  Patients will be directed to Nomad or Boots for the chargeable vaccines.

Telephone numbers to contact other travel vaccine providers are:

NOMAD – 0117 9226567 OR  BOOTS CHEMIST WSM  01934 629068

For patients enquiring in plenty of time before the travel date (more than 4 weeks ahead) please ring reception to book these appointments considering time that may be needed for courses of vaccines.  Patients are encouraged to investigate the FIT FOR TRAVEL website so they are aware of what they may need and if there are timescales for having vaccines.

*There are times when due to unavailability of routine appointments with a Travel nurse, or unavailability of a vaccine, we will not be able to accommodate patients for the free NHS travel vaccines.

Private travel vaccine fees as of 1st April 2014 are as follows:

Rabies (cost per injection, course of 3 injections)
